A major M7.8 earthquake occurred near the coast of Ecuador on 16th April 2016 at 23:58 UTC (18:58 local time).

LAT/LONG : 0.371° North / 79.940° West
DEPTH : 19.2 km
MAGNITUDE : 7.8 Mw
LOCALITY : North-west coastal area of Ecuador, approximately 175km WNW of Quito.
A number of aftershocks have been recorded. The death toll, currently at 265 is expected to rise as collapsed buildings are searched. A tsunami alert issued for the pacific region has since been rescinded.
The first arrival at INSN was recorded at the VAL (Valentia) seismic station at 00:10:31 UTC on 17th of April 2016.
