Dutch Celticist Anton van Hamel is the founder of the chair of Celtic Studies of Utrecht University and mentored students such as Theo Chotzen and Maartje Draak, yet his life has remained relatively unstudied. In this talk, the archives of Van Hamel kept at the Royal Dutch Library in the Hague will be examined, as well as his correspondence with Richard Best, in order to uncover more of his fascinating life and personality and his strong ties to Ireland.
