Samhain agus Science – Things that go bump in the… Ocean
1st November 2021 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Sound artist & composer David Stalling has collaborated with a team of seismologists at DIAS, led by Sergei Lebedev (now a DIAS Adjunct Professor, and at Cambridge University), since 2018. What has emerged is a new set of tools for making sounds of the Earth audible by the human ear, using the latest surround sound technology. Seismometers and underwater hydrophones record vibrations of the ground, vibrations of the seafloor and acoustic waves in the water. Variations in the amplitude of the vibrations in different directions at the same location and between different locations add spatial information on the signals. Stalling found a new way to make this spatial information audible using the ambisonic surround sound technique. The renderings of these vibrations into the sonic domain make for an enthralling, immersive listening experience.
Join David and Sergei in conversation with Dr. Claire O’Connell to discuss the meeting of science and art to produce these unique compositions.
This is an online event which will be hosted in Zoom. Registration is required.
