As part of the DIAS Summer Studentships programme in 2021, DIAS Astrophysics is delighted to offer several Summer Studentships.
DIAS Astrophysics undertakes research in solar physics, space weather, planetary magnetospheres, star formation, astrophysical jets, massive stars, and high energy astrophysics. DIAS Dunsink Observatory is operated by the section and is a designated European site of historical significance for physics.
This years studentship opportunities include:
- Work with Dr. Caitriona Jackman and her Planetary Magnetospheres research group on science projects related to radio emissions from the gas giant planets Jupiter and Saturn. The student may also have an opportunity to assist with the development of new public engagement projects at the DIAS Dunsink Observatory.
- Work with Prof. Peter Gallagher and Dr. Sophie Murray developing education and public engagement activities associated with DIAS Dunsink Observatory. There will be a particular focus on preparing on-line material for teachers.
- Work in the DIAS Solar and Space Weather Research Group on the development of the SolarMonitor.org website.
- Work with Dr Jonathan Mackey developing a camera system associated with the NEMETODE network of meteor cameras. The student should have a particular interest in instrumentation.
- Work in Dr Jonathan Mackey’s group on analysis of radio data for supernova remnants and comparison with X-ray observations. The student should ideally have experience with radio astronomy including using CASA tools and some knowledge of high-energy astrophysics.
Successful candidates should be in line for a 1st or 2.1 honours degree in Astrophysics, Physics, or a related area, and be completing their 3rd year at an Irish higher education institution.
Please apply online here. The closing date for applications is 5pm on Friday, April 23.
The application should consist of:
- CV (max 2 pages)
- Cover letter detailing why the applicant wants to pursue a career in research (max 1 page)
- Letter of support from the Degree Course Director stating that the candidate is in line for a 1st or 2.1 class honours degree.
The application and letter should be uploaded as a PDF file (please do not use other formats) before 5pm on Wednesday April 23rd.
